Looking for a New Hobby? You’ll Love Today’s Video! | Hobbies for Older Women

One of the biggest joys (and challenges!) of getting older is having more time on your hands.

This increased flexibility allows you to explore your passions and spend more time with the people who matter. At the same time, it can leave some of us feeling a little lost for what to do.

So, today, I want o share one hobby that you may not have considered. I’d also love to hear how you are spending your time these days.

Join us for a cup of tea (or coffee) and a chat.

And, if you enjoy the show, please tell one friend about us today. Your support means so much to me!

Even though I am a huge fan of simplification, I do have my secret collections. Rocks, postcards, and crystals to name just a few! In a way, I think that simplification is about saying yes and not about shouting no.

If you take the time to remove the unimportant, you have more room for those little passions that make life worthwhile.

What are your hobbies? How do you spend your extra time these days? Do you collect anything? Let’s have a conversation!

Here is a link to the article that we discussed today: http://sixtyandme.com/collecting-the-best-hobby-for-women-over-50/

Not a collector, don’t like clutter, specially after my momma passed and no one in the family wanted her ‘collection’ 😕 I will purchase a vintage Christmas ornament if it’s in good shape and speaks to me

Owls! Mostly tiny ones from porcelain, wood, shell, crystal, anything really! On a tour through Japan I became known in the group as the owl lady as I seemed to buy a few each day. So then we started having "owl of the day" every afternoon on the coach. It’s a beautiful collection I started it when I was about 10, now I’m 60. So many memories, especially some my mum bought me. They always remind me of her and bring me a smile.

Not really a collections person. I like unique, useful and beautiful things. I’ve kept only the best over the years and love knowing that my kids will treasure most of them after I’m gone.

  13. Kim Sargeant on March 27, 2022 at 7:13 am

Turtle anything: jewelry, small knick-knacks, stuffed toys. My first one just spoke to me when I was out west in the US. Later I found that I have some Native American ancestry. That culture revered nature and so do I.

This has been an interesting conversation on collecting !
At this time in my life, I’ve stopped collecting since I’m downsizing and have actually given most of my collectibles away. During most of my life I collected: antiques, books, sea shells, crystals, fine art, hearts, and dishes. I’ve held on to items that still resonate with me, but 80 % have been given away. When I travel now, I buy gifts for friends and family. At this time in my life, the desire to collect has diminished radically, since my life has become simpler and less materialistic. I pay attention to clean linen, and household items that need to be replaced, and mindful of my wardrobe and what no longer serves me. Less is best has been my motto moving forward and have no regrets for what I let go of that no longer reflects who I am becoming.

Beautiful outfit, color and the cute mug matches. I collect cards that I’ve received over the years but people don’t really send them out anymore. I seem to gravitate towards lovely cards with written statement or blanks. I collect teapots but had to give many away when I downsized…it was sad

Hi Margaret, I love Polish Pottery which I buy from the Pike Place Market. It’s a ritual for me to go there around the holidays when down town is lit up with holiday lights. Sometimes I sneak in there at other times just to "look." Not sure how I started wanting to collect pieces. I love their mismatched detailed patterns and colors.

  36. Viktoria Pettypiece on March 27, 2022 at 7:50 am

I used to collect egg cups… I started when I went to a porcelain painting class and painted an egg cup… I have no room for more but have over 100. I also collect anything , within reason, Puffin stuff… 😁

  37. Susan Wirth-White on March 27, 2022 at 7:51 am

I do love your necklace and color. Your look great!. I have turtles and crystals. I just recently acquired a phantom crystal. Quite rare. Many are raw and uncut and quite unusual. Now, I no longer collect but love to look at the treasures that I have. I also like when children stop by and begin to explore. Parents are always telling them not to touch. I say, go ahead and touch. Explore! I have found when you allow children to explore not only with their eyes, but by touching, you are telling them that you trust them to be careful. So far, no breakage.

  41. Destiny's Journey on March 27, 2022 at 7:54 am

I’ve gone overboard! I started with Star Trek memorabilia but do to space I cut back to action figures, ships and props and plates from Hamilton Collection and then the crossover of Barbie in Star Trek outfits. Then it was lots and lots of Barbies and play sets and then Build a Bears had Star Trek bears and then it became lots and lots of BAB and lots of clothing and accessories. When we were traveling there was a stuffed animal that reminded me of that place plus a t-shirt and a shot glass from each state and each town/place we spent the night. Then it was any shot glass with a 3-D figure inside the glass. And since we traveled by train it was anything train related including a BAB conductor and train. And then I found a Lego train which led to all kinds of Lego sets! Then Hallmark had train, Barbie and Star Trek ornaments! I also have a stamp collection. There’s probably more but you get the idea. Too much and I love it all!

  42. sally Bland on March 27, 2022 at 7:56 am

I collect, create and sell on ebay ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals) art (trading cards) the size of a playing card (2 1/2 in. by 3 1/2 in.) is the only hard and fast rule! I have 3 albums full of these little works of art and have sold many and traded and tucked many in a card or put a magnet on the back for my refrigerator or file cabinet at work.
