I work in a nursing home with 50 + patients 90% have dementia and it’s a crazy disease all people with dementia in my experience are unique, however one thing I find amazing with dementia is certain things they don’t ever forget no matter what. We have one who couldn’t tell you what day of the week it is, couldn’t point out his family however remembers his days in the army in accurate detail, even remembers some shcool friends first and last names.

The short answer is: People with dementia ainā€™t gonna do it. No matter how much you try to ā€œencourage themā€. This video is a joke. šŸ˜

  7. Myra R. on April 14, 2022 at 10:16 pm

Do you have any training videos on how to get help for abusive elderly? The caregiver is the aggrieved party and abused NOT the elderly. And how are the caregivers and family members who provide help and care be given protection against domestic abuse from in-laws, brother-in-laws, etc? How can you heal their hearts from the abuse?! You should put that up !!!!

Hi, I visited my father in 2016 in a memory care home and walked up to him and noticed he hadnā€™t had a bath šŸ› in awhile. I touched his head and noticed there was 1/8 ā€œ thick of skin cream dried on his head that the care givers were applying daily. Could you imagine how uncomfortable that situation was for my father?

This video brings up the difficulty in trying to get a person with Dementia to bathe but it is NOT realistic. There is much more; just more of everything. I have quit asking my mother to bathe. She uses a washcloth and cleans herself and that is enough. I refuse to go through the violence required to get her to bathe. Its not like shes outside working or sweating anyway.

I take care of elderly lady with late stages of dementia and limited mobility-Iā€™ve found if I break it up into two parts it helps. I calmly explain all the steps and give words of affirmation

Part of the problem with privacy can be helped by draping a towel across their shoulders to cover their chest and one across the lap. Just move it slightly and work around it. It can be helpful.

  16. Annyvee on April 14, 2022 at 10:24 pm

This video equals to how p*rn depics s*x: Unrealistic beyond belief, with an outcome damaging beyond belief.
If you think this video is a solution, I’m dearly hoping you will never have to deal with someone with dementia, because you’ll soon find out they have the power to bring your and your family’s (if all of you are the caregivers) emotional, mental and physical state to the grave, progressively.
It can utterly (even permanently) damage you and your family.. and sacrificing the health of everyone for a mentally dead person ISN’T the healthy way of doing things overall.
Not saying violence and impatience are the way. Far from it, but patience MUST have its limits, and most of the times it is better, for a greater purpose, opting for a retirement house.
The real sadness is the fact that good retirement houses cost a fortune, so people find themselves blocked financially and forced to go on a suicide mission.
    Literally, suicide mission.
My family hasn’t had a more dark.. and I mean very mentally DARK period of time than the one we’re undergoing now, and all of it is caused by a family member with dementia we cannot afford putting in a good retirement house for the time being (in our case, she has never been a woman worthy of respect, but for the sake of the bloodline, we feel responsible to heavily care).
Internet can be a blessing and a curse. If you desire info or help about delicate topics like this, talk to professionals and listen to people’s experiences instead.

Yes, good advice. But with mom it’s different. When it’s client it’s doesn’t work. Specially with male .

Dementia tells how every cell of brain is important. A miniscule of alterations in brain composition, and one sees how altered a person becomes one we used to know. It is an unbelievable disease. My father started having dreaded signs of it. IT IS A DISEASE WHICH TESTS CAREGIVER’S TACTFULLNESS. IT TAKES TOLL ON CAREGIVER’S MENTAL HEALTH TOO.

GOD BLESS ALL IN SUFFERING WITH MORE TOLERANCE AND POWER

  32. Liz Bradford on April 14, 2022 at 10:44 pm

Thatā€™s how itā€™s meant to be done a was a carer for years you do need to talk them thr the steps include them in the washing keep talking to them as well make it fun in stead off demanding them to do things they have dementia and donā€™t understand what your doing to them the older people are old school there body is only for there husband to see so they get upset when your trying to cox them to undress also the more you do it they will start to trust you this is a trust thing as well which is very important iff you canā€™t do that donā€™t do care as some people in for the money than it becomes a issue there not there for the residents iv seen it all before

  33. Myra R. on April 14, 2022 at 10:45 pm

I have so much love and respect to people or designated caregivers not by choice but by coercion, fraud and force and abused by the elderly in the US, especially minorities who tried to do the best to care for them but instead the minority caregiver is maltreated and abused by the elderly. I really hope there are protective services against domestic abuse from elderly from the states who get by lying to health care workers, law enforcement and their families and harm those who have no families in the USA. The real picture should be known all over the world!!!!! Life in the US is not easy and itā€™s never love for them. Itā€™s all self-serving and for their own benefits. They underpay caregivers too and family members are even deprived of sleep, rest, even financial freedom!!!!!! Because they know how to manipulate. Especially those who hail from veteran families who just happen to fall in love and marry their son. I donā€™t know. I just felt that I had to say something and stand up against the many domestic violence and abuses and how the women from other countries like mine are abused on a daily basis because the elderly from the US are more protected by their healthcare providers and government. Enough is enough. Why donā€™t their own sons and daughters care for their aging parents instead of overworking, exhausting good-hearted people who become their caregivers and they donā€™t even give them food, and shelter and gas money to be able to also care for themselves. Caregivers do a heck of a job and we get yelled at, laughed, made fun of and even persecuted by mean and some racist white senior citizens!!!! Good thing there are kinder elderly from my Church who saw through my experiences with my in-lawsā€¦. I hope there are more protection for caregivers and family members who experience domestic abuse from elderly!!!!!!

  39. Myra R. on April 14, 2022 at 10:52 pm

I remember all of us in the family (not in the US) caring for my beloved grandfather we would take turns guiding him to the bathroom a thing him. We made this elevated seat where he can sit comfortably and it has an opening to the toilet so he can poop freely without guilt or shame while we bathe and clean him up. Bidet and a water tub is very helpful. We give him something to hold ontoā€¦. That he likes, sometimes just pictures or newspapers anything or play the radio since he loves music. It wasnā€™t too difficult with him and the elderly from my immediate family. We have to be creative and sometimes we would make fun sounds meant for children so they see it as a fun activity like swimming or playing since they have cognitive impairment.. we also make sure they are warm enough, and we put bathroom slippers so they can feel warm on their feet we also prepare their bed and make sure they have fresh clothes and diapers. We put an extra liner thatā€™s highly absorbent so if thereā€™s incontinence it wonā€™t spread to the skin and wipes ready by the bedā€¦.to my grandparents, we love you and hope you are all having a blast in heaven! Much love and happy memories from all of us who took turns in doing errands and did these out of love!!! To all caregivers God bless you for the compassion and empathy to care for elderly! Difficult work

As a Geriatric Nurse, I HIGHLY recommend allowing those with Dementia to participate as much as possible in their personal care. I remember one lady who hated baths and she told me that the reason was because the staff did everything for her and that she was capable of doing it herself (her belief) with the exception of washing her back. I instructed the staff to ONLY wash her back and let her do the rest. If she misses spots or doesn’t do a good job in the genetalia, to request that they go over that section again. It eased a lot of the stress.
